We had hoped to be able to see flowing lava, but on
June 17
"Event 56" changed things at Kilauea. The flow that had been headed
pretty much straight downmountain from the Pu`u `O`o vent stopped, and
new flows were now headed east and north into a preserve
area with no roads. Oh well. But we got to see the craters and
the older flows, and they were impressive enough. At the Mauna Ulu area we could smell the smoke from the fires as the lava burned the trees in the preserve.
